It is nearly a quarter to midnight in the Toraean port city of Davenport. A gentle current brushes throughout the humid night air, causing noticeable ripples in the semi-enclosed bay. For this time of year, it is warmer than usual; cool, but not intolerable in either sense. Despite the time of night, the nice weather has brought out a decent sized gathering of tourists and locals. They mill about near the water and even down into the historic districts, taking comfort in the life of the city surrounding them. They discuss mundane topics politely amongst each other, until a few minutes to midnight, one voice rings out, echoing over the area. "Look, look up there!" It's a young, feminine voice, squealing in delight and excitement. She points from the deck of a boat, her parents behind her, at something far above in the sky. The people begin to gather at the docks and gaze upwards themselves, beckoning everyone to that spot. From here, it looks like some sort of plane, highly visible as it crosses the light of the moon. The rumors and speculation begin to circulate madly; it's a military plane, no, it's a rocket, or a spaceship! Maybe those blasted teams near Twilight City have cooked up something crazy! But as it begins to loom closer, people grow quiet, almost somber. It's far too large for any of those things. And something...something is falling from it. Spectators squint as the wind carries the falling debris their way. It stings their eyes, and they cough...it's sand. Excitement has rapidly shifted to curiosity, and as the behemoth mass hovers directly overhead, curiosity begins to shift to fear. From here, it looks like some kind of massive floating rock, sand spilling from a crack in the center. It's hard to see anything other than the craggy bottom of the object from this angle. People begin to move away, concerned that the object may suddenly fall from whatever force holds it up. Then something in the center of the rocks shifts, and everyone freezes. A swirling purple portal widens, as the sand stops spilling out. The night air is suddenly disturbingly still; dense and heavy and suffocating. Fear is now panic and utter terror, as people try to run. They fail, however, as the earth begins to quake unsteadily, knocking them to the ground. They scream, and one by one they are silenced. The portal on the floating rock is beaming rapidly now, and with each flash someone else disappears. There has been enough commotion now that emergency officials outside of the city have begun to notice, setting up emergency forces to head for Davenport. Their sirens grow unmistakably louder, but by now it is far too late. The city is devoid of all people. Another smell begins to fill the air, though as of yet there is no one to sense it; gunpowder. To add to the hideous cacophony, dozens of explosives begin to fall from the portal, raining down on the city. The military sirens are going off now; the last panic button on this catastrophe. Boom after boom, and the city now lies in ruins. Smoke and sand and flames are everywhere, as the floating mass begins to retreat. One last thing falls; it is a piece of paper. In contrast to the chaos, it floats down slowly, landing gently on the deck of the tethered but empty boat. The rock continues to move upwards, until it is naught more than a speck in the sky behind a cloud. It will wait, silently, inconspicuously, until the next moment strikes. The dawn of our destruction is upon us. Who will rise to defend? (( Indeed, this is the beginning of the global plot. This new subforum is there for you to RP in, and will be monitored. Once people have gotten the feel for this, the plotline will move forth. )) |
